My beardies love waxworms as a treat so I decided to raise a few. I took a 50 gal steralite container, mixed up a couple boxes of bran flake cereal with a few cups of honey, some glycerin, shredded bees wax, and a few baseball size balls of wax paper. Threw in a few hundred worms, slapped the lid on and set the whole thing up a shelf in my lizard room. A couple of weeks later I had moths and a few weeks after that the bedding exploded with baby worms. The bedding started to dry out so I added some more honey and taped the lid down to prevent escapes. Yesterday I noticed they weren't moving anymore so I took the lid off to see what was wrong. The smell of alcohol about knocked me over. Apparently the honey had fermented into mead and killed all the worms (around 10,000 but at least they went out happy). Anyway is this common? How do you prevent it? I think some air flow would help, but then how do you keep them from getting out, they are so small they could go right through screen? So what do you guys do?
Thanks,
Sean
