Just got a red tail boa, got a few questions

mellordies Jan 30, 2004 02:30 PM

Upon studying all I could about my new snake, I find there are several types of red tail boa, how can I tell what kind I have, and not sure the chick at the pet shop has a clue. I also breed mice for my water dragon, so all the pinkies will be snake food when bigger, can it be over fed on fuzzies that just opened there eyes? And should I wait till it poops befor feeding again? It is about 18-22 inches, any clue on it's age? Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Awsome snake!!!

First I wanna say that I am in no way an expert and don't want people ripping me if they don't agree with the things I'm gonna say, They are just what I think after keepng a few boas myself..
#1 I not real sure about finding out the type...sorry
#2 You can over feed a boa with anything!
#3 I wouldn't wait until pooping before feeding again, I feed weekly and some times its a few weeks before defecating
#4 I would say its a pretty safe bet that judging by the size you have a '03 BCI...Again just MY thoughts, and I won't mind being corrected...

I am guessing that your snake is only a few months old... I believe that it is recommended to feed a boa that age one food item approx. every five days or so. The food should be as thick as the thickest part of the snake. Can't help you on the breed, but I think most of the "red-tail" boas you find are C. Imperator.
