I'm getting a frog, what kind is good for a first timer? What food does that kind of frog eat? How big of a tank will it need? What kind of substance should I use for the land? Please suggest a land/water frog. Thanks!

By the land/water Frog I mean one that can live in both water and land.

Horned frogs, whites tree frogs, african bullfrogs, african clawed frogs, and firebelly toads make great first timers. All are pretty hardy. The whites is the only arboreal I listed. The clawed frog is fully aquatic, and the firebelly toads are largely aquatic, though they need a land area. The horned and african bullfrogs require a water area that is smaller propotionally to the land area, something like 75% percent land or so, though 50/50 works fine. Neither can swim too well though. Each will have different feeding requirements based on size, but the general staple for frogs are crickets and nightcrawlers. Both are readily available and make great, cheap food sources for frogs.

The big n fat froggies!

I own two Ornate Horned frogs or "pacman" frogs. They are great first time frogs and are really cool looking as well. They get realy big and fat. o) You can get away with a 10gallon for them as well. They eat crickets

Here are some pics of my two frogs. The first one is my albino and the second is my green.

I'd go w/ pacmans as well. I have a albino and a brown cranwelli as well and I think they make great pets. Ive heard that fire bellies are also nice and I'm considering getting some myself.

ginevive Jan 31, 2004 08:14 AM

I think that firebelly toads are a good starter frog. They are relatively easy to keep, usually eat ravenously and are also fun to watch. You could keep two or three in a 20-gallon long tank. There are many good caresheets online about them; I am sure that someone else will suggest one.
These toasd are great, as long as no one handles them. It's not good to handle any frog or toad, but these guys secrete a toxin that can really irritate the eyes. My friend picked one up once, rubbed his eye afterward and his eye swelled up and turned red! But don't let this turn you off. As long as care is exercised, they're great little guys to have around. They do live a long time, so make sure you REALLY want one before buying.

I have leopard frogs, they were my first. They are great frogs, and low maintenance. I have 3 now, and I love them. The only setback is that they are pretty much afraid of us so they are hiding a lot. They also should not be handled often.

If you go with the fbt's just remember that they give out a toxin and you have to wipe the cage down almost every day (I know because I was originally going to get those, but I changed my mind).
