Advice needed: Can I House in Large Plastic Sweater Boxes?

livXpreshun Jan 30, 2004 04:33 PM

It has been a really long time since needing to post, but I know I have learned a ton of info from everyone on here so I am hoping you can help me out with my new question.

I have a high yellow male and female in two seperate 20 G long aquariums (the critter cages made by all-glass that are the thinner glass width). I love my geckos and have a question regarding their housing. The problem I have now is I am new to California and my apartment is not that big. The cages sit on a three level black shelf that takes up a ton of room, not to mention the fact that the glass is not earthquake proof if a big one hits (I have already been in 2 that were around 4.5 - 5). I have not mated them, and as of now do not plan to mate them so housing them togther is not an option (and even if I wanted to mate them I remember reading you want to have 1.3 or more in a cage so the females dont get rundown).

So - can I purchase those rubbermaid sweater box containers that are approx 1.5 x 2 ft and 5" tall and house them in those? I remember seeing breeders using small versions of the smaller plastic boxes in mass - in my case I would cut out a good portion of the lid and replace it with aluminum screen - and keep their substrate paper towels as usual - with all their hides, etc. just as they are now. I would try to get clear ones (instead of the blue tinted ones) so I could see them more easily. I figure this would take up less room, be easier to clean, and be earthquake proof. The only compromise is the aesthetic of the glass vs. plastic. So, the main question is this: Is switching to these possible? Specifically, will the Cobra heat mats be ok attached to the bottom of the plastic rubbermaid containers and not glass? Does this make sense? Also, will this switch in ANY WAY effect their health? Any comments are welcome. Thank you!

p.s. - on an unrelated topic - does anyone know how to change password and/or user id for these forums? Thanks!

Considering some pay house 100s and possibly 1000s of leos in them, yes...

I don't believe they make clear ones in that size unfortunately, so visibility will be a problem.

For heating, you will need a thermostat so you don't melt the plastic/kill the leos, these cost anywhere from 30-400 dollars each. You can use the regular under heating pads if you would like, but for a large set up with a few of these you would probably want heat tape, but I wouldn't worry about that.

Well, I have both pads on a rhestat that I adjust to keep them where they need to be. Is that good enough as long as I check it every so often? If not and I have to have a thermostat, what would be the cheapest but still quality thermostat for just two of these cages (I am not looking to buy any more leos or breed).

Thank you so much for the reply.

well i dont' know how to change the password id...but I can help with the other stuff...lol You can definitely use a plastic sweaterbox...just make sure there is enough floorspace. Other than the stress of moving they shouldn't be affected too much. You will probably want thermostats or rheostats for the heat mats, just in case they get too hot.

I actually house one of mine in a plastic sweaterbox I got from walmart...I think it's about the size you mentioned and the sides of it are actually very clear! The top isn't though...They had one with a clear top...but they didn't actually have the box itself when I was getting mine...lol I didn't feel like waiting so I just got the one with the fairly see through top.

Yes, it would be nice to see the different set ups. I was able to find a pic of one at leopardgeckos.com - but if there are different ones then pics would be great. Thanks for the idea
