POLL At what resolution do you run your screen?

georgio Jun 07, 2003 11:40 AM

I am building a website and want to know what to resolution to optimize it for. At this point I am leaning towards 800x600 to be more universal but it seems more and more people are running at higher resolutions these days. Would 1024x768 be more applicable? Please let me know.

Thanks,

Peter

Congratulations on the eggs. When Boulder was in "breeding" mode he would headbob and run at my male dragon. Thanks for the input on the website resolution. Hope to hear about 8 little Mali's a few weeks down the road.

I run at 1280X1024, and I know a lot of others who do as well. Here's some info I dug up:

"The two most popular screen resolutions...
800x600 - 47%
1024x768 - 46%

You should typically design for the lowest common denominator. In this case it is 800x600. This doesn't mean that you can design 800 pixels wide. I normally recommend that you not exceed 760 pixels in width as you have to account for scrollbars and the like.

In a perfect world, you should design the site so it is fluid with 760 pixels being your absolute minimum width. This way those who are using higher resolutions will get a site that fluidly fills their browser window. It is a tough design environment to work in, but it can be done.

If you do go with a fixed width, no more that 760 pixels and you'll be able to appease at least 93% of your audience. If you have visitors that are still using 640x480, they will get a horizontal scrollbar as they probably do with 90% of the other sites they visit.

I'd definitely target the 800x600 resolution."

Hey Peter, I do all my websites based on the 1024x768. All my multimedia instructors share the same belief that the majority of surfers out there are leaning towards this setting. A thought for you, when you're "testing" you're pages in a browser, if you're using the 1024x768, you may want any text to seem just a tad on the small side. This will help those in the 800x600 mode so things won't be too large. Good luck.

Hi Peter,
on my Uromastyx-website the following resolutions are measured after more than 1100 visitors.
If I were you I would go for 1024*768.

Screen resolution in percentages:
1024*768 55.78%
800*600 32.66%
1280*1024 7.24%
1152*864 2.03%
1280*960 1.21%
1400*1050 0.44%
640*480 0.21%
1600*1200 0.17%
2048*768 0.16%
560*420 0.04%
