Rock wall opinion

mngrivera Jan 30, 2004 04:51 PM

We are in the process of making an enclosure(formally know as our entertainmet center) and we have been looking at everyones great ideas on the rock walls. So- we went to Home Depot and started to talk to a guy that used to have beardies himself and told him about the foam stone walls ect....We came up with maybe making the stone wall and stone steps with a metal sheet they use for stucco and applying a colored concrete to that. It is very flexible to mold and for added support we want to spray in the foam to keep better support within the stone. What do you think- he thought it would be easier and less messy. I want something that will be lasting because we will be buying our first house next year and I'd hate for it to break apart in the move. We are even adding casters to the bottom for when ever it needs to be moved. What do you think???

Just my opinion, but I made my rock basking area and hide free standing, to make cleaning easier, and replace if necessary. Also using layers of styrofoam covered in grout made a pretty sturdy, but lightweight structure.

I would think that malliable metal filled with 'foam in a can' may be less firm than the styrofoam. BTW, I avoided the foam in a can, I have used that stuff for other home projects, and the fumes are quite powerful, leading me to believe that I wouldn't want them in the beardie enclosure under a heat lamp. (I have heard of a non-tocis verions call Enviro-Tex or similar though that you could try.)

Picture below of my project to give you an idea on the free standing rock.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
