USED pinkies!

white8legarmy Jan 30, 2004 05:36 PM

I have been buying frozen pinkies from the same pet shop for quite awhile and have always been satisfied. However, Wednesday was feeding time for my 2 snakes, after I thawed the little mice I noticed one didn't look right, as I looked closer it had teeth marks all over it, as if some kind of lizard had been chewing on it! Ugh, GROSS! Obviously, this pinky had been thawed, given to something with teeth and then refroze to be sold. I had the nerve to march down there and make a scene but figured it wouldn't do any good. I have since found another source for pinkies, which costs me double but it's well worth it for the well being of my beloved snakes.
If anyone has any pinky horror stories I would love to hear them.

it could be that one of the adualt mice was killing the pups before they could pull them out. If so they prob figured that there was no differnce between them killing it and the parents killing it.

If it was killed by a parent they might not even known that it was dead when they removed it if it was the only one that was killed.

I think that if you have been satisfied up untill now, and if the new place is twice as expensive, I would go back to the old place and buy from them. if you notice this again I would question them about it.

I suspect if you can see the bite marks, they probably weren't made by a snake. It could have been killed by the mother mouse, especially if the teeth marks are long and narrow. A lizard would most likely leave roundish bite marks.

It would be a good ideal to talk to the petstore you normally get your pinkies and mentioned you found one chewed. It may have been tossed in with the good pinkies when some new part timer just decided to toss it back when it wasn't eaten by whatever he was feeding it to. I would give the store the benefit of the doubt that it was a fluke but if it keeps happening, then switch or complain to the management of the store.

I had considered the bite marks to be from the mother mouse. But, if the wounds had been inflicted when the pinky was alive, there would have been bruising. There was no bruising around the wounds, which indicates that it was inflicted when the pinky was dead, due to no blood flow. The wounds were round clean bites, as if whatever chewed on it had sharp teeth.
Sorry, I should have added that in the original post.
