Ringneck& Scarlet king

buddygrout Jan 30, 2004 06:56 PM

I was told about a snake in the hall at my school. I went to investigate. It was a hatchling ringneck. I thought I would feed it to my scarlet king hatchling. But he wasn't interested he seemed scared of it. Maybe he was scared of the camera.Anyway the little ring neck lives. I'll probably let it go soon. Its hard enough to find food for the little scarlet king.

Have you fed the Scarlet King little snakes before? Just wondering, I always thought Kingsnakes of any kind would just jump at a smaller dinner-looking snake.

We have had situations where snakes fed Ringnecks died under circumstances that left a big question mark on the subject of Ringnecks as food. Two that had threw up and died shortly after. Don't have a positive answer as to why...But you are better off looking for another food animal, just to play it safe.

Other Snakes eating Ringneck Snakes and dying? Yeah that has happened and some snakes eat Ringnecks with no ill effects. I have fed Eastern Milks and Black Racers Ringnecks before and nothing died except the Ringneck. But I did have a juvenile Ringneck that accidently got eaten by a Common(Eastern)Garter Snake, the Garter died in about 3 hours. I would say not to use Ringnecks as feeder food, but that may be because they are my favorite snake. But snakes have died after they ate Ringnecks so I would think before trying to give your snake a quick meal.

Ringnecks have often killed other snakes. People have fed them to kings and had both snakes die at the same time. Same with zonata, Salvadora, and other species of snakes.

I don't breed them, I haven't been able to get my hands on them. Buddy had his female lay eggs but he didn't get to them in time, I think he found the baby Scarlet Kingsnake but I'm not sure.

Hi, Thanks for the warnings about feeding ringnecks to other snakes. I posted on field herping forum and got many responses saying the same thing. I'll stick to lizards and mouse parts until they are big enough to take pinkies.
The two I have now are hatchlings from different sources. I do hope to breed my pair this year. It is hard to find enough small lizards to keep hatchling scarlet kings fed properly.

I have fed my adults hatchling racers before.

HerpHelmz Feb 01, 2004 01:35 PM

Is this a pic of the hatchling you found, or of your adult?

Back in the days when they were common I would feed mine Mole skinks and hatchling blue tail skinks.

Fla Mole skinks max out at 6'. Our ground skink at 5'. The average (feeding size) was about 2".
