New basking spot setup

Sunfox Jan 30, 2004 09:28 PM

Ra now has a new elevated basking spot. He really seems to like it because he climbs on it, hides in it, and basks on it. I haven't seen him this active in months I can't wait to add his new dirt so he can burrow too.
Feel free to comment on my current setup.

Thanks

thats really cool. do u have plans for it? or did u just put it together? either way........it looks good.

I designed it but it was my fiance who built it (I helped ). It didn't cost very much either, just the cost of some kind of particle board (only one was needed) and finishing nails. Bought these at Home Depot. We managed to get it built in one evening.

Glad you all like it

what size enclosure is that? I like that idea for a basking spot, kinda like a little staircase.

Sunfox Jan 31, 2004 01:17 PM

The basking spot has 3 levels total. The basic dimensions of it is 12" long X 10" wide X 6" tall. Each "stair" is 2" high. The first platform (the bottom one) is 12" long, the second platform is 10" long, and the third platform (the top one) is 8" long.

Hope this helps

That's fantastic! It looks just great!

Did you finish the wood at all or is it unfinished wood? What type of wood is it?

It's unfinished wood but I filed down the edges to round them out. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is (maybe particle board). It's a wood that has several layers glued and pressed tightly together. It's also one of the cheaper woods (only paid a few bucks for it). Check out Home Depot, that's where I bought it.

Just curious. I'm wondering if varnishing it would make it easier to clean (as long as the varnish was thoroughly dried, of course!) Or will you just sand down the messy parts?

I know also that snakes can't take certain types of wood (ie. cedar) and wondered if the same holds for uros too?

I really like the steps idea, it's really fantastic!

I can't tell you anything about varnish. I didn't use any for the simple reason that I don't know if it would poison my uro if he were to lick it (he always licks anything new that's been added to his "territory". I also didn't really want a glossy finish to make the surface slippery. By leaving the wood in its natural state, it makes it easier for Ra to get a better grip with his claws. He climbs those stairs like a pro (Hmm, did I just invent the first reptile Stairmaster? ). The wood I used is fir, not ceder. As for sanding it down rather than varnishing, I'm keeping an eye on Ra to make sure that the sanded down parts are not giving him any trouble (ie. splinters, cuts, etc.). So far, so good.

Good luck with your own setup
