meal worms

shootist Jan 30, 2004 10:06 PM

what is happening to my mealies? i purchased 1/4 lb (smallest size available) at an expo for a cheap price about a month ago (i think). ive only got one leo so the mealies are not getting depleted quickly. ive noticed that some of them get out of their skin and turn into a little white thing. they dont move in this stage unless you poke em in the head a little. what is happening to them and should i throw them out or give em to my leo?

Are you keeping the in the fridge? If not...

1. They are changing into pupa. The mealworms are actually the larval stage of a beetle. After this they will turn into the beetle, breed, then die.

2. Your worms will NOT be gutloaded at feeding time, unless you're keeping them on oats or some other edible substrate.

If they are in the fridge, this happens. You can try feeding them, I have leos that will eat them.

Can you tell me more about how you're keeping them, fridge or not, substrate, if any, things like that? We'll be able to give you a better answer knowing more. Dave
