dagangsta Jan 30, 2004 10:27 PM

ok, first off how does everyone go about measuring their basking temps, i just put the "out" probe of my dig. therm. on the hammock i use for a basking spot right under the beam of light, is this right, cuz even with a 50 watt spot i get basking temps of about 130 degrees f sometimes, my room is typically about 80 deg. so yea, and also i was looking at home depot today and noticed that they sell mercury vapor bulbs, i was wondering if these would work well along witha repti-glo 8.0 and also what i hafta do to go about protecting myself from it, thanks a lot for yer help in advance

Check out tempgun.com...their temp guns are a great tool for any hobbyist or breeder.

hey, yea i know about the temp guns and have been wanting one fer awhile, thing is though well i'm only 16, all of the herps listed are mine personally and i'm hte one who feeds and buys all the stuff for them, lol, so yea, i werk at persmart don't make too much, and b/c of parents i only get a third of what i make so i usually end up with about 20$ a week, 5 of which usually goes to crix, and the rest disappears lol, so yea, def can't afford a temp gun fer now, got any other ideas?

What size is your enclosure?

Try lowering your hammock to adjust the temp lower. that is one of the good advantages of the hammocks is the easy adjustability. Also do not waste your money on a mercury vapor bulb from a hardware store. They are not the same bulbs as the ones that are made for reptiles and put out no usable UVB light. A reptile MVB would not do you any good either since you are overheating with a normal 50w bulb already.

i have a 50 gallon reptile tank, 36" 18" 18", am i measuring temps right?, b/c in this case i see no way that sum1 could use a 150 watt bulb or even 100 watt
