horny male with 2 females...

FatAl Jan 31, 2004 12:39 AM

Hi all,

I have 2 female juvi's and 1 male juvi all housed together for about 2-3 months now. The two females are about 50% bigger then the male. Recently the male has been getting really agressive, biting the females all over. Sometimes the females dont mind but sometimes they freak out and bite back (one of them is gravid i think). I know this is normal behaviour for breeding (and i know he is in the mood because his thingy is out) but i am really worried that im going to wake up someday and see a tail missing or a dead gecko.

I seperated the two females from the male today cause he kept on biting one of the females and she really didnt like it. I was just wondering if it is okay for me to leave the male in with the two females even though he is biting? I want them to breed but not if it causes tail loss or other injury. I have 4 hides so i dont think that is the issue?

Would it help to get more females? if so how many? Tell me what you think, thanks.

who are the pics of?...you only have 2 names on there...I'm assuming at least one of them is one of the females....they look WAY to skinny for breeding! I'd suggest keeping the male away from them until they are at least 50some grams each and have very good condition (i.e. MUCH fatter tails than in those pics...). I hope the supposedly gravid one is not one of the ones in the pics and that her tail is good and fat at least...otherwise she could end up dead....

also, I'd suggest a smaller water dish (assuming the huge blue thing is a water dish), it probably has the humidity of the enclosure too high. You should also try to darken the humid hide...they like at least nearly complete dark, and may not use the hide if they think its too bright.

Yeah i will try changing to a smaller dish. Thanks for the suggestion. Im actually kind of worried about the humid hides because one of the geckos spends almost all her time in there, i heard they can get like respitory infections if they spend to much time in thier humid hides.

As for the pics the first one is the male, Garfield. He is really skinny but he is a lot fatter and bigger then when i got him like 3-4 months ago. He is fatter now then he is in the picture. And the second one is the "gravid" female, Mo. Yeah im a little bit worried about the eggs too but since they are already there is nothing i can really do to reverse that. I wasnt expecting them to show breeding behaviour so early. I have been feeding her lots of butterworms, silkworms and dusted crickets and she has been eating alot and fattening up, her tail is at least 50% fatter then it is in the picture. Hopefully she will be okay.

I will keep them seperate until they get bigger but when they do get bigger do you think i can keep them all together or will he be too aggresive? Would it help if i get more females? Thanks for the advice and the help.

Just make sure you get as much nutrition into her as possible! 3 of my leos spend most of thier time in their humid hides...I'm not sure why though. Anyway, you seem to be doing well with them...I don't know about the male...it would probably be best to get another female or two if you tend to keep them together all the time, and make sure the females are big enough to breed when you put them together. You could also keep the male apart from the females except when you want them to breed.

might want to alter your gecko's diet, and add more suppliments to their food. My leos generally loose some tail fat when they haven't gotten their multi-vit in a while. g'luck....

Also the male is the first one pictured, right? He's a beautiful leo. Good luck!

one last thing: Be sure to go easy on them. If they're still young, don't breed them. They may go through the motions, but your eggs will likely be infertile. It will only cause stress on your leos. Give it time, and bulk thse puppies up!

I was always under the impression that juviniles weren't sexualy mature yet.....

Yeah i have been giving them lots of calcium powder and been feeding them butterworms and silkworms more often now.

Yeah the male is the first picture he is a little fatter now. The second one is one of the females.

I really didnt want to breed them i just found out in the past week or so that the male was a male. Then i noticed that one of the females was getting really fat and i picked her up and i could see 2 white spots in her belly. I am still not sure that they are eggs i heard they can be fat storage.

I thought since she has eggs i might as well leave the male in there and let him fertilize them, i didnt think neither of them were old enough to do any breeding anyways. But then he was biting so i took him out.

Should i worry about the eggs? Will she be okay having the eggs now? Is there something i can do to make sure she is okay?

Thanks for the help.
