Mounting heattape (25W Exo Terra Heatwave) to PVC cage - question

snakes Jan 31, 2004 05:54 AM

Hi!

I have build my first plastic cage - this is made from PVC.
I will experiment with HDPE next.

My question is about heating it. I have 25W Exo Terra Heatwave:
www.hagen.com/usa/reptiles/product.cfm?CAT=31&SUBCAT=3106&PROD_ID=03020400020101

I am planning to put in inside the cage, on the ceiling. Does anybody have some more experience with such setup?
Do you think I can mount it directly to the PVC top of the cage? Or should I use something (for example ceramic tile) to mount it onto?

The cage will be for ETB, my room is heated and the temp in whole room is controlled by thermostat, at 74-75F during the day. This heat wave will just have to create warmer spot and gradient for my snakes.

At this moment I use light bulbs for heating, but I found it not very practical in my setup.

I hope you guys have some suggestions or experience with similar products/setups.

This is the view of my cage, with bottom drawer allowing to exchange water/substrate without stressing the snakes

Me too, me too! Beautiful cage, though I'd hafta paint it a different color... Shock white just reminds me too much of rubber-rooms...

Nice cage.

The link you provided shows a substrate heat, not a radiant heat panel.

If the product you purchased is indeed a substrate heater it will not radiate heat downwards as a radiant heat panel will.

To create a slight gradiant with a substrate heater you should tape it to the back or side of the cage and have a perch that runs close to that area. The PVC will conduct the heat and warm that area of the cage.

It will not to much to heat the entire cage, but it sounds like you don't need that.

If it is a radiant heat panel, mounting it on the ceiling is correct. However, I don't know how to do that without seeing the product.

How did you build it,how much did it cost, and where did you get the supplies to build it?

That is an awesome cage.
