Can mice eat through 1/4" hardware cloth?

animalmaniac Jan 31, 2004 12:58 PM

Hi everyone,
I am making my own breeder cage out of a large rubbermaid, hardware cloth, and ripped 1X4. I got my mom to pick up some 1/4" hardware cloth to make the top and a food hopper. I read somewhere on the internet that mice could get out of 1/2". Now that I have it it looks awfully small for mice to eat through. Should I get 1/2" or has anyone successfully used 1/4" inch for feeding? I am feeding lab block if it makes any difference.

Thanks,
Taylor

P.S. THANKS to everyone who has responded to my questions in the past. You all are the most helpful forum on kinsnake that I have come across.

1/4" hardware cloth is what I use for all my racks. They eat through it just fine. You are right, any larger and you will have babies escape or get their head caught in the mesh.

if you use 1/2" for mice.. you will come into your rodent area one day around the 'weaned' size.. and find them running around EVERYWHERE!.. LOL trust me i made the same mistake when i was starting out

they are able to eat thru the 1/4" mesh just fine!
