Opinions Wanted: Best Supplements?

livXpreshun Jan 31, 2004 01:24 PM

I read a few posts on here about supplements, and wanted everyone's opinion. Right now I sprinkle Reptocal on the insects - and their vitamin trays have a 3 part mixture of 80% pure calcium from Rep-Cal, 10% HerpCare Cricket Dust from Mardel, and 10% Reptocal from Tetra.

My question is specifically - is this ok, and even if it is what is your opinion on the best supplements? I saw a recent post which led me to believe there is an all-in-one supplement for leopard geckos from t-rex. Is this a good mix that can be used for the dusting of insects as well as the vit dish?

Also, is phosphorous bad for leos? I thought i picked up a vibe on it possibly being bad for them. Thank you!

I use Minerall (I) because it not only has calcium/D3, it also has many trace elements as well. I gutload crickets so I don't usually suppliment except for breeding season (now) with Herptivite once a week.
You can use the Minerall (I) in the dish and even dust every day with it. Don't mix the vitamins and mineral suppliments in the dish because they will degrade over time. They are fine to use together when you dust, though.

The t-rex supplement is actually a complete food that you dust onto the crix or whatever insect you use. It has high quality sources of Macro nutrients(protien, carbs, fats) and micro nutrients(vitamins, minerals). It also contains probiotics which are benefical bacterium that aid digestion, plus plant extracts that may enhance colors. I feed mealworms only, so what I do is keep an 1/8" layer on the bottom of the feed dish at all times. I replace it about every 1-2 weeks, because as Rick said vitamins degrade with exposure to air and heat, and light. This is the ONLY supp. I use for my bredders and growing leos. I do not have a calcium dish, just the t-rex leo supp. To answer your other question, Phosphorus is not bad for leos...in fact they need it. The thing is insects already contain plenty, this is why it is recommended to use a phosphorus free supp. It is generally accepted that retiles need a calciumhosphorus ratio of 2:1. The t-rex supp. has been formulated to contain enough calcium that when dusted onto insect it will come very close to that ratio.
good luck
