Veiled eating leaves

Anthonyd Jan 31, 2004 02:35 PM

My male veiled is 8 months old. Latley I have noticed him eating the leaves off his ficus tree. I have heard of neonates and juvaniles doing this, but adults? And this is on an almost every day basis now. Now i am worried for his health because I know that fucus have a sap that can cause harm to animals that try to eat it, or atleast that is what I have heard. He is sprayed and fed every day, why is he eating leaves? If any one can help or give advice, please do. Thanks in advance.

Actually it the adults that eat the leaves not the younger veileds.
The ficus will not hurt your veiled, the only problem with a ficus is that the sap can annoy there eyes.

Ok,I was just making sure everything was fine, because none of my other veileds have done this before, and I guess it is. Is there a better plant I could but in his cage?

I beg to differ...I believe they will eat vegetation at any age and frankly the sap in ficus can certainly be an irritant if consumed in large amounts. This is true of pothos as well, another commonly used herp plant. Typically, they do not eat enough to warrant concern and veiled being the only species that eats vegetation these plants are perfectly safe for most.

Luna has taken an occasional bite of both with no ill effects, but Tony, if your cham is eating a lot try offering him some other alternative greens and fruit. Put some dandelion greens, or others in a cup. Do you cup feed? Put the veggies in with your crix and he'll get some by accident and then say "mmmm, much better than ficus!" LOL

But seriously, if his hydration is good just offer him some selection. I am no expert, but that is from my experience with Luna and what I have learned here. Keep us posted

no offense, but you said adults only and that the ficus was safe and only an eye irritant. My response was quite a bit different. I just wanted Anthony to know that if his cham was eating a lot it could indeed be a problem. I felt he needed more info than what you had given rather then having his cham eating lots of ficus and then wondering where mouth sores or other problems came from - that's all

thank you I was thinking about my misinterpretation of your post this morning and really felt sort of stupid ;-/ I was sort of on the defensive that day due to some "stuff" that was going on so i think I came to the forum with an attitude - not my usual cheery self!
