Question about hognose...

dmac77 Jan 31, 2004 03:21 PM

How long do the western hognose snakes usually live in captivity? Is there a big difference in the longevity of westerns and easterns? Also, are any of you on this forum distributors or breeders? I'm interested in purchasing a hognose snake (preferably eastern, but I'd take a western) but I can't seem to find anyone in my area that carries them. I found one petstore in my area that said they could order me one for $250, but that sounded a little high to me. Thanks for any help and info.

$250 for a normal western hognose is way out of line. I sold my '03 hatchlings for $110 per pair. That was after they were started on frozen thawed pinks. Groups of 3, 5, and 10 sold for a better price per hatchling. I think most breeders are sold out at this time. I may be wrong but the only ones that are likely to be available from last year are from resellers. The guys that breed nothing and make a buck off the breeders work. Just my opinion.

I think a lot has to do with where you buy them. They are comonly sold in S. Florida For $40-$75. for Westerns. Easterns are about the same.

Thanks for the heads up. I thought that $250 sounded a little steep. I looked around at some of the breeders listed here on Kingsnake and found that I could order one directly and have it shipped and still pay less than half what that pet store was asking. Glad I decided to check into that price before I paid. I'll be keeping my eyes open for new borns this season. If any of you guys here breed and sell, feel free to shoot me an email.

I'm in Raleigh, NC. Apparently this area isn't all that big on herps. Most of the pet stores in the area don't even cary snakes and the ones that do carry only one or two corns and that's about it. I've been trying to find private breeders and shops, but haven't had much luck with that yet.

Well, these guys don't have any listed right now (they're in NC, not sure how close to you), but you might contact them and see if they will or ever get any hogs. They might be able to refer you to someone or order for you:

I don't think Will ever really has hogs, but again he may be able to refer you to some good breeders:

Of course, there's always my favorite solution...plan a trip to one of the nice big reptile shows.

Best of luck!
