mini broms

leif Jan 31, 2004 06:29 PM

Hi all!
I went into a Shaws supermarket in Maine yesterday and found some mini broms among the usual house plants. I was pretty excited since all I have been able to find to date are those big broms that fill the smaller tanks.

If you are looking for mini broms, check Shaws!

Just thought I'd share that....

Happy frogging!

Leif

I saw those. They're a type of Vriesa I believe.

They're also in full flower. I believe bromeliads pup at that point and the original plant dies (but I'm not positive about that).

Yes, do these pups look like a closed up version of it's parent at the base af the brom? I bought three and two had these. Do I just leave them as is or do I somehow have to remove the pups?

I already placed them in my viv and hate to torture them again, but it would be nice to get a 2 for 1 deal!

Thanks for the info

Wait, when a brom blooms and pups the original dies? Does this apply to all broms or just the type that is sold at Shaws?...

Thanks

I think I have a few types of Vriesa. they were both flowering when i purchased them and now the flowers have lost their color I wrote it off to it's life cycle because I have decent lighting...enough to keep the color in a fireball cross that I have in the same tank. The vibrant flowers are why I bought them does anyone know that if you clip the flower if it will regrow?

Hopefully an expert will chime in... but I believe the parent dies after flowering. I'm not absolutely positive though.

The pups will do fine.

You can seperate them once they put a little size on.

Vrieseas do pup from the base of the mother plant after flowering. The mother plant will continue to decline as the pups grow, and the pups can be separated by using a good serrated knife to separate them once the pups are 1/2 the size of the mother plant.

However, buying plants from commercial seller does not ensure that you know what the size of the mother plant was really supposed to be. Many times the mother plant was forced into bloom before full growth. I have a Vriesea 'Tiffany' that was 6" tall when I bought it from Frank's Nursery one year ago. The bloom was out of color, so I got it for $1. The pups ended up being more than 12" tall and still haven't bloomed (actually, I gave one of the pups away, because it was just getting too big in that 50 gallon).

Oh, and they don't reflower.

Like Homer said plants are treated with a substance called bonsai to slow down the growth of the plant and then are fertilize to bloom this way they get small flowering plans. Mostlikely the pup will be biger thn the mother plant but you never know.

One more question about broms. What happens if you don't remove the pup? Does the pup just continue to grow and crowd out the "parent" plant? Does the parent plant die off or will you have two broms side by side?

Thanks, Leif

Sorry for the d.p., don't know what happened....

Depends on the brom. Some take a really long time for the parent brom to die so for a couple of months you have two brom side by side. I have fire brom which are growing like 4-5 brooms per 3" pot they are like weeds. Only one is anchored to the soil and the other three or four send a "root" more like a small vine from which to anchor. So I think you can have hem growing side by side for a while.
