Bump on kingsnake's tail...need help

TheThinker Jan 31, 2004 06:40 PM

Hi, I own a corn snake and a king snake and a friend of mine recently brought to my attention that the king snake has a bump on his tail...

He's a little over a year old but he really hasn't grown much at all; He's still eating pinkies. I'm not completely sure what sex he is, but when I bought him the man told me he was most likely a male. He has always been very skittish and is even afraid of his dead food, today I had to put him in a little tiny carrier cage with the pinky just to make sure he eats it. I'm going to check up on him and see if he's eaten yet as soon as I post this...

I was showing Domino (That's his name) to a friend of mine and she noticed he had a bump on the top of the end of his tail right above the anal scale. I touched it a few times and I don't think it hurt him...I'm not sure, he moved away from me when I did it because he really doesn't like being touched at all. It doesn't seem to hinder his movement at all.

Is this something I should worry about? Honestly it may have been there all along since I first bought him and I never noticed, but I think it came up recently...I probably would have seen it at some point before now. Are there any signs I should watch for? Anything I should do to help him?

I called Petco and they told me to take him to the vet, but they don't know anything...they practically tell you to take it to the vet when you ask what food it eats. They're really no help at all...

I had a dream that both my snakes died last night after I found the bump and it still has me shooken up. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks...

Well if it has been there all along, I wouldn't worry. If it's new, go to the vet. Can you tell if it's a bony bump or not. Is it hard or soft? If it's bony it may just be a birth defect and no big deal (but you probably shouldn't breed him). If it's soft it may be an abcess and will need lanced and cleaned and the snake will need antibiotics.

...it's not likely a genetic defect but rather a DEVELOPMENTAL defect that is not inheritable. In addition if you haven't tried yet you might want to try offering food more frequently to try to get some size on this guy. Good luck!
