Could my igg never be able to climb??

mike d Jan 31, 2004 07:09 PM

i dont know if any of you know about my adopted adult male iguana. But he was basically abused from the time he was little. the guy who had him first NEVER let him climb. even when he was little. Then when that guy got rid of him the shelter i got him from aquired him. And they are basicaly a cat/dog shelter and did not have the right equipment to take care of him.but a couple donated money and he got vet check ups and the right set up. then he was adopted out agian and again he was not alowwed to climb. Now i have him. He has been to the vet and my vet doesnt really know what is causeing him not to climb. so i took down his shelving and made him a lower basking area and he is doing much better now.

Anyways here is my question. He is supposed to be around 4 years old. and in that four yeasr he has never climbed(except for one occasion with me) now could it be possible that he will never be a ble to climb because he has never climbed before? if so would i make sense to make his enclosure less tall? like take the upper part of his tank and make it so he lives up there? that way he will get the feeling that he is up high and feel secure?

Im so confused

Hi, My Iguana's feet are very arthritic as well due to not
being able to climb for 2 years before I adopted her. Her
enclosure is 6 1/2 feet tall with 3 levels. Bottom, middle
and top. I placed a shelf the entire width of her habitat
in the middle for one gradiant and then one the same way across
the top. Then I bought the white shelving units from Lowes. The
ones you would use for closets, they have rungs like a ladder.
I placed one long one from the bottom to the middle shelf and
then a shorter one from the middle to the top. She cannot
climb logs and such but she has no problem with this. She
gets around great and can climb safely on her own.

I have attached a picture of her enclosure just after I
finished it. It isn't complete but I am hoping you can see
the ladders. The smaller one from the middle to the top
is at your far left hand side on the side of the spot light.
Good luck and maybe trying this will give your Ig the confidence
to climb again.
