ETB Breeding info

mikebell Jan 31, 2004 07:10 PM

I'm looking for breeding info for ETB. I found one care article on K.Snake by Stan Chiras, can someone direct me to other articles on K.Snake or elsewhere?
Thanks

Don't know of any articles, but maybe I can answer some questions.

Thanks Craig,
Besides the article by Stan Chiras, I found some on Corallus.com by Danny Mendez.

I was looking for general Breeding info. I have a few large cages with 1.2 adults. Spraying water and drains. I have read differing opinions about NTL temps. I know not to get them too hot during the day. Also do the M/F need to be separated. I have been spraying them more the last two months, several times a day. I believe it is almost time for breeding activity.

Thanks for any info, Mike

Hey Mike,
We always keep our animals separate unless we are trying to breed. Makes it easier to keep track of who did what. In our situation we have to heat each enclosure individually. We usually keep the high side of the enclosure at 80-82 F and allow the night time drop to around 75-77 F. Gravid females will get a "hot spot" of as high as they like, which we start out at around 85-86 F. Some want higher some want lower, just have to get a feel for each girl's preferance.

I can't tell you about cycling as we have never had to in order to get our animals to mate. We usually start in late October and allow the male and female to mate until no evidence of copulating remains. This usually happens in mid to late February. We only try one male with one female as opposed to others who like to use multiple males to one female. Makes it easier to keep track of the bloodlines.

It's good to gather info from breeders as a guideline, but I'm sure you will find, like I have, that your own situation will determine what works best for you.

We also separate the male and female for feeding on our normal schedule and allow 5 days for digesting before putting them back together. We always introduce the male to the female's enclosure.

Thanks Craig,
Is that as low as you go for winter NTL? Danny Mendez mentions 70, maybe 68. Stan Chiras say low 60's are OK. So far I've let it hit about 70 a few times, the rest of the time maybe 72-73 NTL.

Last year was the first time I put them together, it was also when I built the large cages. They showed breeding activity, but all I got was one pile of slugs. My adults are good size cbb 7 years old. Do you think keeping them together has thrown them off? I only have one male in each cage. I could rotate males from cage to cage. I have three large cages, 7ft tall, 4 ft wide and 2 ft deep. Two cages have 1.2 and one cage has 1.1, there are four smaller cages with 1 female each. I'm thinking of moving the males to the small cages with the single females. I live in S Fl, winter didn't start until mid december. They haven't shown any signs of breeding ywt, I wish I had records of when I put them together last year and when they were breeding.

Hey Mike,
Yup that's as low as we set the AC in the house. Where in So. Fl. are you? We live in Pembroke Pines.

Craig,
I'm in WPB. You can e-mail me at schlegeli@mac.com
You don't let your ETB get colder than 75 in winter? Have yours been breeding lately?

Hey Mike,
We only have one project going for this year. They started mating back in November. She may be going into ovulation right now. We had 1 northern litter last year in August(2 live, 1 stillborn and 3 slugs) a basin litter on Thanksgiving Day (11) and another basin litter on December 20 (8). We only let the temp drop at night to the AC setting for the cages with Ranco units and 76 F for those with Helixes.
