leo stopped eating...

aimee_s Jan 31, 2004 08:32 PM

sorry i haven't posted in a while, i've been really busy with work and school.

i noticed that my leo hasn't been eating for the past 2-3 weeks. before, she'd eat about 10 - 20 mealworms each night. now, she'd stare at the mealworms or wax worms (waxies only given as treats once every other week) and then just walk past them and try to climb up my hand. she'd rather be handled than eat. i even tried crickets, but nothing's working. she just drinks her water, walks around, and tries to climb up the wall or on my hand... she's always looking to explore outside her tank... this is the most curious i've seen her, even though she's been handled every other night for 15 minutes before. any advice would be appreciated

- day temp: 86F - 88F
- night temp: 80F - 82F
- tank size: 10 gal.
- leo age: 9 months (i've had her for 5 months)
- all food items are dusted with either calcium or repitive (switched nightly)
- substrate: brown paper towel
- two hides, one on warm side, one on cool side
- UTH under warm hide

that's some info in case you need it.

thanks again

Have you tried putting the mealworm/wax worm in your hand yet?

yeah i tried it last night... she'll look at it, lick it, and then just walk right past it and try going up my arm. so when she was sitting on my shoulder, i tried feeding the mealworms and wax worms from a VERY shallow dish... but nothing i did this for about 20 or 30 minutes coz we had a blackout last night and i wanted her body heat to stay up... and all she did was walk all over me like she's never explored me before

Its probably just the winter brumation period. Leos generally slow down a little during the winter. There have been alot of non-eating posts recently. As long as your leo isnt losing alot of weight, she should be alright. I'm not sure how long this period lasts.

i took her out of her winter brumation period when i came back from my vegas vacation (jan 5). she's pretty alert and active right now and sleeps during the day, but is wandering around a lot in her cage at night. but, a week later, she just stopped eating all together... and at first i thought she wasn't losing weight, but now it's pretty noticeable.

Hi

Just throwing a thought in there, maybe she is ready to be out of her tank a little more to spend more time with you.

I have an adult male that would rather I pick him up and hold him than eat his food. After I hold him for a long time and then he gets put back into his tank, after several minuetes of realizing he is back, then he will think about if not eat.

Take Care, TLB

hi tlb,

she does act that way - she actually would rather climb up my hand than put any interest into her food. the thing is, when i put her back and try to feed her, she'll still try and go up my arm. i tried a plastic spoon and she tried climbing that - she'd climb up her warm hide and stand in the air... she'll even lean against the glass and stay there for hours, trying to get a grip on something (looks like she's swimming up), and then i pick her up for another 15-20 minutes and she just walks and walks and walks... i put her back - same thing happens. so after 2 tries, i give up and just leave a dish of mealies in there.... the mealies are still alive... none missing actually two were, but i found one under the paper towel and one just morphed into an alien. i even tried a mealworm beetle, but she just looks up at me and throws her hands in the air

Hi

With mine I will pick him up and maybe hold him for two or three hours at a time and he loves it. Also that way you know it is getting good exercise.

Hi

If you are worried about her getting cold, let her climb on you of whom is warm, but also you could wear a sweat shirt jacket and when she starts to feel a little chilly, take her and put her underneith it next to you and let her get warmed up again.
