Looking for future breeding project...(need advice, nickpurvis! come here!)

LizardLuva Jan 31, 2004 08:35 PM

I want to start a small breeding project with a smaller, available lizard pair. i want to do this as a more of a expierence to see when im older if i want to take up bigger breeding. I am looking for some thing thats available, but not the most super common at expos (such as leos and beardies).
What i am looking for:
Something around the size of a house gecko, anole or golden gecko.
Price for the pair under 40$ at an expo, etc.
kept in a 10-20 gallon tank. (Maybe 30...)
Maybe something i can handle
Somethink that will only produce a few, good quality kids. not 30 of em!
Thats about it, if possible can you post as many selections with good and the bad of the species.
Thanks again!

Don't forget, that just because an animal lays dozens of eggs, you don't have to incubate all of them! You can freeze unwanted eggs as soon as they're laid to prevent hatching.

What about some day geckos? I haven't priced them at shows, but I've always loved the Standing's day geckos.

well ok.ill give you the info you were asking about on each of these choices

panther, big headed,or pictus geckos(this species has many different names)
downfall:they breed all the time so you will have to seperate the male from them after they have bred a few times but this means they also lay many eggs.
cost:about 30 dollars each
upside:you can fit 3 in a ten gallon and five in a 20 gallon

viper geckos
downfall:they will cost more than you asking
cost:50 dollars or over
upside:easy to breed and require basic care needs

house geckos(their are many different types including a giant one and you should fid out wich one you wnat first)
downfall:not much as they are all oretty hardy except some have small babies
cost:usually under 30 bucks
upside:hardy and most are dirt cheap

brown or green anoles
downfall:they can be rather costly to set up
cost:usually under twenty dollars
upside:breed easily adn babies are pretty easy to raise

crested geckos
downside:not much as they are considered a very good beginner gecko
cost:around 50 dollars
upside:very hardy and very easy to breed

gargoyle gekco
downside:not much but i think they need it alittle cooler than some geckos but im not quite sure.
cost:around 60 and up
upside:easy to breed adn easy to care for

gold dust day geckos
downside:not very much as they are very hardy lizards
cost:around 35 dollars
upside:very hardy and pretty easy to breed

these are some of my suggestions.i dont think you should freeze the eggs though.also one more thing.some reptile stores advertise on this site in the classifieds and some sell gravid female lizards.this is how i got my first babies as i got some from a reptile show and to my surprise the female gave birth to 6 babies later that month.hope this info helps you and once you dedcided on what you want tell me adn i can probably help you out.
