Lookin for a possible skink breeding project....

LizardLuva Jan 31, 2004 08:53 PM

I want to start a small breeding project with a smaller, available lizard pair. i want to do this as a more of a expierence to see when im older if i want to take up bigger breeding. I am looking for some thing thats available, but not the most super common at expos (such as leos and beardies).
What i am looking for:
Something around the size of a house gecko, anole or golden gecko.
Price for the pair under 40$ at an expo, etc.
kept in a 10-20 gallon tank. (Maybe 30...)
Maybe something i can handle
Somethink that will only produce a few, good quality kids. not 30 of em!
Thats about it, if possible can you post as many selections with good and the bad of the species.
Thanks again!

Sounds like gold skinks are what you need. look down lower for the pics I posted of mine, they are gorgeous. Also, mine just had babies 4 days ago. here's some info on them
-can keep male female in a 10 gallon
-easy to breed (and I do mean EASY)
-have only up to 8 babies (mine had 3 but one died)
-can be handled if bought at a young age (my male used to be nice til I moved him away from the babies)
-they are 30-40 bucks each
-they are relatively uncommon (nobody on this board knew what gold skinks were til I came along)
-they exhibit very hilarious and quirky behaviors, and some are very active.

You mentioned hangling them and I was wondering how quick they are. I'm gettin' excited about these little guys! Will it ever end? The addiction to herps, that is !

yeah they are good jumpers and can move very fast if they want to. Just don't piss them off or scare them...they get less jittery as they get to know you. They aren't like anoles who are just annoyingly fast...don't let one out into a wide open area like a back yard, cause I'd wager you'd never see it again. I've actually seen my female clinging to the mesh top of her cage walking around upside down!! she jumped halfway to the thermometer, then the rest of the way up. She hasn't done it again that I know of, but man they are agile! It makes for amazingly short cricket hunts, even the babies (who ate today) can move disgustingly fast and accurately.

What are you talking about?

RaderRVT Feb 01, 2004 06:40 PM

on another forum about the "cuteness" of silkworms. It was a long thread that included suggestions for names of the silkworms and ..... Well, you get the idea. We all have a little too much mental time on our hands! LOL

BTW, don't be mean to Eve or risk getting flamed! She is very much loved on these forums! LOL

Still waiting for new pics of your guys, (hint) Oh well, I did see a nice baby BTS shot today, hes a cutey, look real healthy.

How many have you found homes for ? I remember you telling me your going to keep one, thats nice, it will be very friendly, if you handle him every day. They do get very tame.

Hey sure is nice to see you on here everyday too, my lizardy friend

I'm kind of picky so I haven't really been advertising. You know, being "my babies" and all! They are soooo sweet you could eat them with a spoon! LOL

OT, I got a new baby tomato that I'll take some pics of soon! Shhh, don't tell my husband!

I buy first anymore, and tell him later, hhahahahahha

Or else ya have to hear ANOTHER ONE ????
You know where I'm coming from ! Geesh ya feel like a kid explaining why you got a new one, problem is I've dang run out of excuses as to why, LMAO

Oh well, you did great if you anly have 2 left. Wow ! I also would be quite picky about where they went.
And as far as advertising, your right, you already know ya can't do that on the forums, hehehheh , only classifieds, (thats the law in these parts) LOL

Speaking of names of prey, I name every cricket I get after my brother who hates them (dan)

RaderRVT Feb 01, 2004 11:09 PM

You can name all of your prey critters after people that p*ss you off! How cathartic would that be to watch as all of the annoying people in your life get crunched?!

I love it!!

Apparently I am a genius with names of animals...I've had a few comments on the names of my gold skinks (twitch and pirate captain spasm I). I'll let you know about the baby that I'm keeping once I name it...that'll be when I get a gender for it

eve Feb 02, 2004 06:45 AM

parate is neat also, its fun thinking of names for critters !
Good job!
