Mystery frog

caxolotl Jan 31, 2004 09:18 PM

Hi!
My roommate and I have an pet axolotl and since we where having so much fun with him we decided we wanted to try our hand at some aquatic frogs. So we went to our usual store, which specializes in herps and have always been very good. They where keeping dwarf african clawed frogs (which is what we wanted) and something called popcorn frogs in the same tank. The guy grabbed us a couple of what we thought where dwarf african clawed frogs and popped them in a baggie for us but when we got back home I was looking at them and thinking hmm that's strange.. they don't LOOK like dwarf african clawed frogs, they have protruding eyes and no claws on their big webbed feet. So, I guess we accidently got a pair of popcorn frogs. No problem, I like frogs either way except I can't find anything about these "popcorn" frogs online. They don't seem as aquatic as the dwarf clawed but they seem to be doing ok with a pile of rocks sticking out of the water of their tank that's about 6 or 7 in. full of water.
Does anyone have any idea what these little guys are? They have a pale underbelly and one had a pale dorsal stripe. Also, their skin is a little rougher than the dwarf clawed and they have big webbed feet with brown speckles on the webbing and, like I said, no claws.
Thanks,
Eleanore

Sounds like Xenopus:

Thanks, but they're defintely not xenopus.

I think they're Indonesian floating frogs (rice paddy frogs)so any tips on how to take care of these guys..
We switched to crickets now and they seem to be eating. We're going to try and get some plants in there and maybe more land since they spend a lot of time on land and not a lot of time floating.

Thanks,
Eleanore
