More Genetics... sorry, im just curious

hhawk20005 Jan 31, 2004 09:39 PM

Hi,
if i cross a blizzard, and an albino, is it true that will get normals, blizzards, albinos, and what... 1 in 100000 blazing blizard? also, what are the numbers for that... like out of 10 babies... would 6 be normal, 2 be ablino, and 2 be blizzard...? any help s appreciated.

If you cross a blizzard with an albino you will get double hets. All the offspring will appear normal, but will be het for both traits. If you breed these double hets together, theoretically you should have a 1 in 16 chance of producing a blazing blizzard. For some reason, however, this does not seem to happen and much lower percentage of the offspring hatch out as blazing blizzards. You will also produce albinos, albinos het blizzard, blizzards, blizzards het albino, double hets, het blizzards, het albinos, and normals from the cross.

The reason for not getting the number is that we are looking for a specific trait to show up. Not all albino leos have red eyes. So the 1/16 will happen, over the long run, it is just that not all of them will have the red eyes.

Ok...first lets just assume for now that blizzard is just a simple recessive gene...this would make this case very simple genetics. genes are units of inheritance that allow the expression of physical traits. In simple genetics there are 2 alleles or variances for each gene. The traits being looked at here are recessive traits, which means they are only expressed if both alleles are the same. This means when you are crossing the two leos with recessive traits, all of the babies will end up with one recessive allele from the "fancy" parent and one normal allele from the other parent. Lets look at it this way...lets say the allele for a normal coloration is A and for albinism is a. A leo will only be albino if it is aa for the gene, if it is AA or Aa, it will have normal coloration. Now lets say the allele for normal pattern is B and for blizzard is b. This means BB or Bb will give normal leos, and only bb will give a blizzard. Now that we have that info...we can say what the parents genotypes (arrangement of alleles) are for the 2 traits. The albino leo would be aaBB and the blizzard AAbb (since neither is a het...which means one of each allele for a trait). When you cross the two all of the offspring will be AaBb since they get one allele from each parent and will all therefore be normal colored hets! Lets see if I can make a punnet square on here to show the inheritance...

----__Ab_____Ab__
-aB|_AaBb_|_AaBb_|
-aB|_AaBb_|_AaBb_|

The blizzard parent always gives the alleles Ab...since all it has for the 2 genes are A and b...same goes for the the albino parent who always gives aB. The punnet square is just a visible way at looking at the inheritance. You could also make a square with the offspring and would be crossing AaBb's together with AB, Ab, aB, ab to see what offspring you should get from them (although blizzards really don't work that way and are much more rare than they ought to be).
