Mouth Rot

stefaran Jan 31, 2004 10:31 PM

Hey
I just realized my young blizzard has mouth rot. I plan on taking her into the vet first thing monday, but I was just wondering what is the recovery rate? Is this something she is going to have a hard time pulling out of?

Thanks!

do you have a pic of this?
I think if it is treated well, it should pull out of it.
Personally I've never had a reptile with mouth rot, but a vet should be able to help you out with that

Are you sure it is mouthrot? Leos can and do get stomachitis (mouth rot.) It can be like a yeast infection, similar to thrush in babies, and is usually an indicator of something else going on in the leos body. Take the gecko to the vet for treatment ASAP. It can be bacterial in nature, so usually a culture is necessary to determine how to treat it appropriately.

In the meantime, take a Q-tip and get it wet. Then, put a few drops of 2% hydrogen peroxide AND a few frops of iodine on the wet cotton. Swab out the gecko's mouth, paying special attention to the gums. Leave it in there for a few minutes and rinse the mouth out with the other end of the Q-tip. Do this a couple of times a day until you can get to the vet.
