A question for Edward

PerryM Jan 31, 2004 10:58 PM

I have a group of 4 fire skinks that have bred repeatedly for me over the past few years. The trouble is, I don't have the first clue who my males or females are. Do you have any hints on distinguishing gender in Riopa? I would like to know so maybe I can refine my breeding efforts.
Sincere thanks,
Perry

check which ones get fat for no reason- that's a good indicator (means they have babies!). Also don't most skink males of any species have larger heads than the females?

Hi, Perry:
There is no guarantee this method will work, but it's the only one I know of that is relatively helpful.
In general, males are more likely to be brighter in color.
(Notice all the "generally" and "more likely" aspect of my response. It's because it is not uncommon to find males that are less colorful than females and therefore, color is only helpful some times, but definitely not always.)
Thanks for asking for my advice and I hope this helps.
P.S. Perhaps you could post pictures of your skinks?

I usually just lurk here, but you seem to be an authority on Riopa. Thank you for taking the time to answer.
I do not have a camera capable of taking decent close-ups of my lizards yet. I will post some when I remedy the situation.
Thanks again.
All the best,
Perry
