Selecting a lizard for me

Everlight389 Jan 31, 2004 11:13 PM

I've been researching lizards for quit some time now, but still need some first hand accounts from keeping the animals.

I would like to get a lizard that could live in a 55 or 75 gallon aquarium, but have had some trouble figuring out which species fit in these tanks.

What I'm looking to get is a lizard thats very tame, takes some care but not loads of time (30 mins/day), and stays under 4 feet.

Some of the lizards that I've researched are the Blue Tegu, Savannah Monitors, and Yellow or Red Ackies (Ridgeback monitors).

To my knowlege Blue Tegus stay under 4 feet, but can either be a very tame one, or one that bites on a regular basis.

Savannah monitors have been hard to research because information that people give me is very diverse. Some say that they get 5 feet long, others 3, some say they are very tempermental, others say they are very tame.

Yellow and Red Ackies sound like they are tame and small, but people have also given me diverse information about their temper.

Though I've come to some conclusions about these species, I need first hand accounts of size and tempermant.

Thanks

The largest lizard I'd put in a 75 would be 2.5 feet. The tank is simply too small for something like a savanna monitor.

It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

i believe the perfect pet would be either a sheltopusik or a type of plated lizard as these lizards areoboth known for their gentle temperment and their eas of care.check some care info on teh net adn find out about them.i will hopefully be getting a plated in a few months.
