HOW DO I KNOW IF A CORN IS OBESE??? or overweight?

cv768 Feb 01, 2004 01:36 AM

I have a few corn snakes and other colubrids and just yesterday somebody dropped me off what appears to be two female corns and one looks...to me...overwieght...It appears as if it was being powerfed to make it grow faster...or something of the sort...it is about a year old, and 20 inches long it's thickness is about 1 inch in diameter...not sur ehow much it weights...I could weight it if need be...but for now...

what are some signs of overweight corns???

>>OK, look at one of your corn snakes. See how the scales come together almost interlocking or overlaping?
Well, with an obese snake the scales will be separated and you will see signs of the snake's body between the scales.
I hope that makes sense. About the best way I can think to describe it.

The corn snake which was brought to us seems (in my opinion) much too heavy...it was said to be about 8 months and she weights 60 grams...not sure if that helps but...where her belly is...the checkered pattern part protudes and sort of hangs very slightly...about 1 mm or 1/16th of an inch...it looks like it's definetly overweight as if this guy was trying to fatten it up or power feed it...

Any suggestions on how to get a snake back to normal weight??? (I'm assuming Jenny Craig does not take snake applicants)

>>I guess there are a couple of ways to go.
If it is on a weekly schedule you could possibly move it to a two week or maybe even three week schedule until it trims down.
Or, if it is eating two pinkies a week you could cut it back to one pinkie a week for a while. Or fuzzy or hopper or whatever the meal may be.
Either cut down on it's meal size or cut down on the frequency of which it is fed.
If it is extremely obese you might even combine the two.
Cut back from two items a week to one item every two weeks until improvements are seen.
Just some thoughts on the subject.

......keep it growing.......

feed it a good meal once a week...NOT too much and not too little....and not too often if you want it thin......

8 month olds.....2 foot long?..one mouse a week.........

not a big mouse...a mouse........

Is it just me or does 60g seems actually very light for a 8 month old snake that is close to 2 feet long? My male cornsnake is about the same age and is close to 3 feet long. He weighs about 160g (at last weighing several weeks ago now). I feed him once a week an appropriate sized mouse, or two smaller sized mice, depending on what I have available.

A picture and recent weighing of this corn snake would deffinitely make it easier to tell if she is obese or not.

No, sorry I estimated wrong...the snake is only about a 18"...

I don't know, the poor thing just looks very very overweight...if the digital camera would ever get fixed I'd post a picture.

My normal was purchased in March at a show. She is over 3' and when weighed yesterday was 250grams. When I thought she could handle it, she would be moved to multiple prey then next prey size. She is currently at 3 small mice(13-16gr) once a week. I have bulk of this size so she'll be eating these for a while. I've also been giving her an occasional rat pup(?) instead of sm mouse. She doesn't look overweight to me - no exposed skin - but feel I'm overdoing it with 3 sm mice. BTW, she's in a 20gal long and will be moved to an AP T10 next week. Some pics, opinions on size appreciated.
