Ringneck Snakes

kivets Jun 07, 2003 03:01 PM

I just bought a Ringneck for today and was wondering if anyone here has one or has had one in the past. I know they are nocturnal and that they eat earthworms. Max is about 8 to 10 inches long. Some of the questions I have is sand alright for the bottom of the cage? It is what I use for my breaded dragon. Can he at this size climb up the side of his cage? A 10 or 15 gal tank with sreen lid. How damp should I keep the sand/soil? Rignt now I have large rocks and a clay sauscer that he is sleeping under. Does anyone know how long they live?
Thanks in advance, Kivets

They probably live 10-20 years...maybe less. Mine lives in damp Bed a beast (expandable coconut husk). It stays buried most of the time. It eats skinks and earthworms as well as small frogs. I do not use any heat and when I did, it made the snake stop feeding. They could possibly climb, but you should have a lid for any snake. Andy

Thanks Andy for the info. I do have a lid but the one side don't seem to fit as tight as I think it should and was worried about him getting out before I could get it fixed. I fixed him up today with some peat, rocks, and twigs. He has at a small slug and a small silkworm. How big were the skinks and frogs that you feed your ringneck? Thanks again,

My ringneck is about 8 or 9 inches probably. He will eat skinks up to about 2 or 3 inches. As for the frogs, froglets of most species will work though in Houston we have an introduced frog species, the Rio Grande chirping frog, which my snake seems to like. Andy
