Greggm Feb 01, 2004 08:34 AM

First it is a hatchling about 2in not including tail.
In a 20gal tank with a heater and filter (temp is 79) and a basking spot.

Now I've had him 4 days and he hasnt eaten. Ive tried small rosy reds and floating pellets.i've tried putting him in a small container . and tried at night as well.

should i try something else small worms maybe?
or is he still getting use to the new aquarium ?
could he be sick ?

Thanks in advance

Hmm. I know a few others here would have more to offer you.

I usually try holding the rosie by the tail and taunting the turtle with it...usually they get the idea after a while. Most turtles will snap defensively at you if you do that, and if you are good, you can make them snap on to the rosie. Don't do it too much though, it may stress him out alot. Give him some hiding places to make him feel better..

dont know if this is helps but he is active he moves around the aquarium climbs his rock and lays in his pvc pipe really dont think he's sick,

he's really small he might not have had his first meal yet , i will ask the dealer tmr.

if he hasn't is there a way to get him adjusted ,just tried the rosy red in front of his face thing, no luck, will try again tonite.

he has a white thing the size of a pin point right where he tail begins is that where he was feeding from the egg

this is my first turtle kinda worried/impatient but not a beginner to reptiles over 7yrs exp. most monitors and pythons but nothing aquatic.

any help is good

thanks again

If it hasn't eaten yet it should still have some "yolk sac" attached at the middle of the plastron. Are you sure he hasn't eaten? I've had my baby snapper since September. I've never seen him eat anything but he's 4x the weight he was when I got him. You could try tiny guppies, pinky mice, different types of bugs...be creative. Once he starts eating he'll never stop!

My two turtle hatchlings are absolutely voracious when it comes to pinky mice, When they were as small as yours is, I fed them newborn pinkies. I also fed them betta food, which is just like turtle food, but with more protein and fat. They absolutely CRAVE betta food.

Does anyone know where I could get a good substitute for betta food now that they are getting a bit larger?

Hope I helped,
Jasz
