Feeding question

mbmcewen Feb 01, 2004 09:37 AM

Every morning I spray my tank and then throw in ff. I always throw in a lot. Well, I sprayed yesterday and there were many ff left over that started hopping around when the water hit them. So I didn't put in any ff. Well, I just sprayed today and there are still ff hopping around in there...should i not feed today either? Should I wait until all of the old ff are gone.

This happens to me alot. I usually cut back the feeding to about half of what it usually is. This way, the frogs will be getting the vitamin/cal they need and not wasting as many flies. Also, you could feed in the morning, then spray in the evening just before lights out to stir up the flies and give the frogs an easy to fond meal before they hit the sack. I believe that the food does them much better when they eat just before going to sleep as it will be digested at a much slower rate thus being stored away as fat.

Good idea. I will try spraying at night.

Thanks,

I read somewhere in the forum that you should put a piece of a bannana inside the tank to see how many ff there are but I am not 100% since I myself don't have frogs yet :0)

The banana thing is good for young frogs or very large tanks. I used it when my frogs were young and it worked great. Also neat to see them all standing around it:

Nice pic, Kyle. Are your leuc's calling at all? I have 2 that are like dueling banjos. They called all day yesterday. I'm just hoping that the other two really are females and not fat, skinny-toed, mute males! It's a pretty cool call.

Yes my male calls a good amount, but no eggs yet. I'm hoping for some in the spring.

Yeah, I use pieces of apple. I hate bananas.

Its not an exact since thats for sure. I've spent about 3 months getting the weight of my azureus under control, they were huge. For young frogs you want food around all of the time, but not tons either. The banana thing does work well, and gives you a good idea what is still in the tank. When the lights go out at night the ff's will come from everywhere to the banana.

I think I at least am starting to figure out the amounts each of my frogs need, and it is not really that much. A few ff's a day. I was really overfeeding them, so its a matter of what works for you and your tank. I can say there are a lot less escapes when they are fed properly.

I remember your fat azureus!! LOL
I guess it is time to start cutting back. I overfed for a while just because they were new and so young. They are starting to get fat though. Frogs are funny about that.

I also stopped feeding them larger ff's. I plan to give them some larger ones today for the first time in a long time.
