Rubbermaid Stock Tanks

tommyturtle Feb 01, 2004 09:55 AM

This may be a re-inventing the wheel type thing, but I recently ran across a 50 gallon compressed foam stock tank by Rubbermaid at a local DIY store. It is 31" wide, 50" long, and about 13" deep, perfect for a hermann's tortoise, russian, greek, etc. I built my own wooden pens (roughly the same size) but I've always worried about disinfecting. These stock tanks solve that problem completely. Anyway, I'm really excited, thought I'd share it. They're about $50, and I'm slowly but surely replacing my other pens with these for convenient winter keeping.

That sounds very interesting.

Could you post the name of the store, and the name or # of the Rubbermaid product?

Thanks.

The store was called Menards, but it is a local place. Rubbermaid's website will list the places closest to your zip that sell them, though. I'm going in as soon as the streets are clean (we're in the middle of a snow storm) to purchase two more. This is the product number.

Check out the seasonal/hardware section, under stock tanks. I tried the link, and it didn't take me to the right page.

I think I am going to special order one, I am adopting a Female Russain Tort. We use those for the smaller sumps in the pet store. We also have one thats about 600 gallons, its enormous. But i wonder if they have one that size thats flatter, more like a storage container? The site is odd to navigate, ill keep looking.

I don't know how much they are, but most stock tanks in the 125-150 gallon size are around $75-$100. If there's a farm or ranch supply where you live, they should have stock tanks. I think a lot of feed stores can order them, too, if they don't have them available.

I agree that they would be easy to clean and disinfect, and a lot cheaper than a Vision tub, too.

You know what works great? Cardboard boxes. And cheap too. You just get a large box, tape up the bottom real good with duct tape and then cut the sides down to about 8 or 10 inches high.

I have had my baby desert tortoise in such a box for 5 months or so now and the box is still in good shape. I just put him in the box outside in the sun when I got him and put chicken wire over the top to keep the crows and cats out. Of course, I had a hide box for him too with hay in it, and a board across the top for partial shade. Guess what his hide box is made out of? Yup, cardboard. When it finally gets too dilapidated, you just get a new box. Cheap and easy. When he gets out of hibernation, I will have a bigger box waiting for him. It is about 4' by 3'. I think a big TV or something came in it.

Cardboard boxes for tortoises. You can't beat 'em. Jeez, I feel like Martha Stewart, only without the jail jumpsuit.

And they have a 60"x36"x12" mixing tub! That's a lot of floor space. Might have to call around and see if I can get one of those.

The only trouble I could see with those mixing tubs is that with the sloping sides, it's a little hard to tell how much available floor space there actually is. You might be losing as much as 6" from each end vs. something with straighter sides. I'd want to know the floor dimensions before I bought one.

And they have about 8.5 square feet of space.

How practical would one of the 150ga stock tanks be? I think they're a great idea and I could get one for free. My parents have one at their house right now and they wont need it come spring so should I bother asking for it and trying to use that? They're awfully deep.
