Regurgitate fur?

sashasnake Feb 01, 2004 10:57 AM

My desert kingsnake ate a live fuzzie 3 days ago. This morning I found what looked like part of the regurgitated mouse. It didn't have any real form, looked just like the skin or fur or something. It didn't have any kind of odor. I haven't handled or messed with her at all since she ate so I know that is not the problem. I'm worried because this is the first time she has eaten since I've had her. Is it normal, or did the fuzzie not get digested all the way?

My amel cornsnake had a similar situation. Feed 2 fuzzies/week. Regurge was week after last feeding and minimal handling. He had fresh feces in one corner and a 'hairball' in the water dish. Here's a link with picture in the cornsnake forum. I'm treating like a normal regurge. Did you have a cold spell? That's the only thing I can think about my situation was a temperature drop. It's been 2 weeks since his last meal so he gets a pinky today - hoping it was a fluke but will keep you updated.

The only temp. difference was that the day I fed her I bought a ceramic heat emitter so the colder weather wouldn't be an issue. Before the emitter the temp was 83 in the day and down to 75 or once even cooler at night. Now it is 89 in the day and 80 at night. If it was warmer in the cage would it have the same effect? I wouldn't think so, but who knows. Also, her regurg. was smaller almost like a chewed piece of gum.

That's a tough one... regurging can be tough to diagnose and treat, and it can turn into a chronic condition. I'd wait 10 days and try feeding again, hopefully the snake will keep it down and everything will be ok. It sounds like the snake got at least something out of the meal, but it's still sort of a bad sign. Don't worry too much yet- just see what happens next feeding.... although you may want to have a vet lined up.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."
