Jason - why do you want to cover the soil? Soil needs oxygen,
if you put anything over the soil there will be a build up of moisture - quickly - and mold is sure to grow resulting in either a dead plant - or sick cham.
Tell me why you want to cover it and I'll try and help with another solution...

Either cover the soil with rocks, or as Chimbakka suggested previously on this forum, use the plastic mesh bags, like what you would buy onions in, hot glued to the pot.

Jason-

I use green moss and rocks or window screen and rocks or just rocks, to cover up the soil. On my site under non-toxic plant list is a link with pics on one way I cover my pots (moss & rocks). Hope this helps!
