Feeding trouble...

Matt Hampel Feb 01, 2004 02:21 PM

I have a BP (female, named Saige) that's roughly 3 years old. She never had any trouble with feeding and slammed rats readily once a week. She took her feed aggressively, even though she's incredibly docile and gentle.

She hasn't eaten in over 2 months, she's rejected her last 3 offers, and hasn't shed in a while. The skin over her snout is getting kinda dry looking.

The temperature of the cage is the same as it's always been, the set-up is the same as well.

I sat her in this cocoa-nut reptile brick bedding that holds an awful lot of moisture, to see if she would shed with it... Nothing.

Any ideas?

Was she eating live or f/t? Mine was eating f/t mice then just stopped. So today I went and bought a live mouse and she took it in a second! It's weird how she's been eating f/t for so long then stops. As for your snakes skin looking dry, soak her in luke warm water for about 20 minutes. She may be dehydrated.

Well, she pounds large rats, do you think it's smart to put live large rats in the cage???

Also, she didn't seem to like the soak much, she was constantly trying to climb up the sides of the tub, she's always doing that.

live rats???
that's not smart, because rats are known as agressive creatures and they may harm your snake!evenn mice are agresive sometimes!
u should try with a mouse.
that's my opinion an knowledge aboute feeding with rats!

No, definitely don't put a live large rat in with her. A twitching, barely-alive rat maybe or a live adult mouse sure, but not a live adult rat. You were right on that.

If she's having a hard time shedding, you might try soaking in a secure enclosure (like a Rubbermaid tub with lid -- one of mine likes to soak, but not til the lid goes on) and then rubbing her with a somewhat rough towel or washcloth. Often you can get it started for them that way if they're having trouble. Also, some folks recommend using Shed-Ease spray. I've never tried it, but I've only heard good things about it, so it may be worth a shot.
