Waking Up Tegus

blue_tegu Feb 01, 2004 02:54 PM

Anyone think there's any real harm in waking your tegu up occasionally to take her out? When people come over they love to see her but she's always asleep by 2 PM which means I've got to pull her out. She never shows any signs of aggression or agitation, she's just stunned for a couple of minutes after I pull her out.

While I try not to disturb my tegus when they're burrowed in I don't think an occasional wake up would really harm them. One thing you might want to try instead is if you know someone's coming over you could keep him up until they get there. From personal experience I'd say there is a danger in waking them up every day because if it wants to hibernate it wouldn't be as obvious. The danger is that they stop eating for hibernation; if you wake him up, get him active, and warm him up he'll start to waste away.
