intro and a question on behavior

lizbet Feb 01, 2004 04:30 PM

Hi, I just got my first snake, a baby california king named Gabriel. I have a question about his behavior though I read that kings were very docile and Gabriel is living proof. I only purchased him two days ago and already he allows me to pick him up without a struggle, sleeps in my hand quietly and prefers me over my roommate. He has already reached the point that I can pet his head and stroke him without him flinching, even when he's in his cage. Are most kings this calm even as babies? And I read about some kings behavior changing as they get older, is this anything I should be worried about? Thanks and you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge, aside from a pair of frogs he's my first truly exotic pet so I'm trying to learn everything I can.

Some snakes are just never any trouble. With consistent gentle handling your snake should stay very tame. Your biggest problem might be him associating your hands with food, which is just more likely to happen with some snakes than with others. If your snake is having a bad day and doesn't want to be picked up, he'll probably let you know by rattling his tail.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."
