Gecko handling

pocketfulloffire Feb 01, 2004 06:24 PM

what is the best way to get my gecko to let me handle it?
-----
I only know 3 ways to do things.
The right way.
The wrong way.
And my way which is the wrong way only faster.

Ryan: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Mick: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?!

Ryan:Help me someone i have a mortal wound!
[Kyle runs over]Kyle:Where does it hurt?
Ryan:Oh i would have to say.....IT HURTS IN THAT BIG BLOODY HOLE STUPID!!!

Never reach in and grasp your gecko. This promotes distrust. Patience is the key. Start introducing your hand, but take it slow. Put your hand in front of them where they can see it. They will probably run at first. If they do try again the next day. Pretty soon they will start licking your hand and becoming curious. Then they will start walking on your hand. Then you can start lifting them a little, then bringing them out to explore. I have two geckos that will walk onto my hand everytime. I have one that will still run everytime, so your geckos may eventually want to be held, or they may hate it their whole life. If your having trouble gaining their trust, put a mealworm or disabled cricket on your hand. This may not work at first on a skittish gecko but pretty soon, when your gecko gets more comfertable, they wont be able to resist and will walk onto your hand to get the food. My advice has been a little shakey lately, but this is what i was told when i started handling and it worked for me. You may want to wait for a more experienced opinion though.
