leo not eating

archamedes1 Feb 02, 2004 12:54 AM

I haven't posted in a while because everything was going good, until last week. My leo is almost five months old and has had only mealworms since he was born. Last weekend I bought a deeper dish so mealworms wouldn't escape. Ever since I put the new dish in there he has not eatten. I have switched back to the old dish and he still doen't eat. Today I bought him beef baby food and had him lick some of that, but he was not interested. I also fed him four baby crickets which he ate, as far as I know. Do you think that he is tired of mealworms or is there something else going on?
He lives on reptile carpet so I know it is not an impaction.

Thanks, Jessica

Jessica-

You are correct about the chance of impaction being almost nil. A number of factors could be at play here really, cooler temperatures, changing light cycles, etc. Do you know how much your leo weighs? Does he have a nice, fat tail?

If I were you I would offer him 3 or 4 appropriately sized crickets (for a 5 month old that should be 1/2-3/4 grown). Sometimes they will fire on crickets and completely ignore mealworms. Another thing you could try (depending on the size of the gecko) is tong feeding or hand feeding small superworms. That has worked for me in the past with stubborn feeders that just decide one day they are not going to eat mealies anymore! I honestly believe that a varied diet for your leopard gecko is a good thing! Eating the same thing day after day after day would get old for us too!

I am not sure how much my gecko weighs, but yes he's tail is nice and fat like it is suppose to be. Today I was going to go and get some bigger crickets and see what happens. Thanks for you help.
