Maritimes are incredibly variable but the main differences between eastern garter are the lateral and vertibral lines. Marimime lines are very faint or all together lacking. They are usually stronger towards the head then the tail. The Melinistic ones come mostly from local populations in atlantic CANADA and any melinistic garter in NY is almost certainly an eastern.

Small snake with a short head. Lateral line on rows 2 and 3. 17 dorsolateral scale rows. Otherwise Very similer to eastern garter. Not an easy snake to find pics for.

There's a pretty good pic of one in the Barron's Garter and Ribbon Snakes book by R.D. Bartlett and Patricia Bartlett. This was the very first garter book I bought and it's my favorite. My son spilled pop on it last fall and I've been looking for another ever since. Finally ordered one from Amazon and it came yesterday. That's why I remember the short head; btw, it's on pg 11. Shows the head and part way down the body, not a full shot.

Sprig - Head Keeper of the Mellen Menagerie: 1 cat, 1 betta, 2 garter snakes, 3 baby red-eared sliders, 2 little gray tree frogs, feeder fish and crickets... & a partridge in a pear tree!
(Just kidding about the bird! But I DO have a hubby, a 9 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl in the mix!)
