ellymae Jun 07, 2003 05:24 PM

WE HAD A SOFTSHELL GAVE TO US AND WE PUT HIM IN OUR WATER GARDEN POND WHICH IS ABOUT 75 GAL. AND FROM TIME TO TIME I FIND HIM OUT OF THE WATER AND HE IS DRIED UP SO I PUT HIM BACK IN.SO IS IT O.K. FOR THEM TO DO THAT? BECAUSE I THOUGHT THEY HAD TO STAY IN WATER AT ALL TIMES OR THEY WOULD DIE.CAN ANT ONE GIVE ME ANY INSIGHT...

having kept a softshell and seeing them in the wild, they do come out of the water to bask. so i would say its normal.

ellymae-- Softshells definitely bask and they need to be given an area to get out of the water, preferably a smooth rock or a small log. Some of them are very sneaky about how they bask so you might not see them do it often. If you find your softshell out of the pond, he may be trying to escape to a more desireable larger habitat...like a lake or river. A small softshell won't last long looking randomly for waterways. Make sure you make your softshell enclosure escape proof or he'll get away and become a crispy critter. --Maxx
