Anaconda Update!!!!

zoolady Feb 02, 2004 09:10 AM

Those of you who were wondering...
The anaconda that finally ate last week after 9 months of not eating, ate again last night!! I asked my local vet how long I should wait till I fed her again. Some people on here suggested 2 weeks. But he said since she is so young and growing and has lost some weight from not eating right all this time, I should feed her once a week till shes a bit bigger. So I fed her the same as I did last week. Thumped the rat on the head and put it by her water. It was gone in 10 mintues! Yippy! I think things will be OK for her now.
You can see pics of Siren at http://photos.yahoo.com/gwas79 in "The Critters" album. Along with all my other reps.

Sarah,
Glad to hear that she finally ate. Unless there is a health problem or an environmental problem, I have never seen a green that would not eventually feed on it's own before it lost a significant amount of weight. Thanks for the update.

hi zoolady, I saw your pics in your album, nice. i do have one comment, the pic of your anaconda cage, is that what you have him/her in now?? if so... not a good idea. for water just give him/her a large bowl. problem is, is that bacteria will build up in there so fast and end up harming your snake. and buy the way great looking Nile how is it doing? I see you can hold it bare handed. Also is that your water monitor in that pic? he was great looking.

Mr.Anaconda,
Yes, I had tried a large water dish for her for the first nine months. She did not like this. And didnt eat until I made it like this, more natural. I do clean it out on a regular basis and disinfect the tank with reptile safe glass disinfectant. I clean her water (taking all the water out, disinfecting, and putting in fresh water,) 2 times a week. So it stays clean. In one of the pics in my album the water looked dirty. It wasnt. It was the new reptile bedding I had put it there. Some kind of wood chunks. The color bled into the water. So I cleaned it out and it hasnt done it since. I do however use kitty litter boxes for the land section of her cage to keep the land dry and separated from the water. The first attempt failed because they floated when i put the water in. Which it when the water got into the wood chips coloring the water. But I then too marble rocks and filled the botom of the litter boxes with them to hold them down. And rocks under the boxes to raise them up a bit to keep them from floating as well. This has all worked very well, and she has never been happier. The nile is doing fine now. Yes, I can hold him without gloves most of the time. Though there are times when he wants to be fiesty, but that usually only lasts a short while. That is my Water monitor as well. He's a big lazy lover. I hope to get my Nile as friendly as him, but not getting my hopes up.
