Red Tail Caging Survey

boidsntegus Feb 02, 2004 09:27 AM

I am doing a survey to see what size enclosures everyone recommends for an adult red tail (see pic). What dimensions, substrate, hide box or not, water tub size, etc. Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

I currently keep all my adult boas in precision cages 4' X 22" X 13" with a large water bowl and a cat litter pan for a hide. I would like to get a couple of six foot cages for the bigger females during breeding season, but they all seem to be content with the 4 footers.

I've got a female Suriname that I'm planning on housing in a 6'L X 2'D X 17.5"H Boaphile cage w/ a shelf when she's fully grown (now she's only about 4.5 feet long). 2 of the 6 feet will be from a "Blind" to create a hide area. I would consider this cage well above adequate with regards to space.

I forgot to add that I use several layers of newspaper for substrate. I feel that if you use aspen or any particulate substrate, you have to remove all of it every time you clean the cage. Otherwise you will never get all the urates out. Right now I use a Rubbermaid shoe box for a water container. I'll probably get the next bigger size for when she's fully grown so she can soak if she wants to.

I use 4'x2'x2'. If I had a Boa over 8' I think I would go with a 6' cage.

JMHO, FWIW, YMMV.

I keep my large girl in a 6x2x2 ap cage with newspaper as substrate, no hide, and a large dog water dish for the water.
I keep my largest male in a 4x2x2 moonstruck with the same set up.
I keep my smaller boas in a mix of home built enclosures ranging from 2x2x1 up to 3x2x1 (I am getting ready to upgrade many of my homebuilts and racks to ap 3' enclosures)

You never experience life until you have kids..then you realize what you should have done rather then what you did do

Hi Randy

I've been looking real hard at those AP cages. How are they working for you? How do you heat yours?

Thanks Jim M
