Tegu GONE MAD??help ASAP!!

evan Jun 07, 2003 05:39 PM

Back on May 20 I made a post about getting a new tegu for the first time. Well since then he has been great.....UNTILL YESTERDAY. I noticed that he had started to shed on Wednesday. So he had been spending almost all day and night in his hide box....which has moist moss in it. He came out today for the first time....and acts like he has lost his mind. he goes running from one end of the tank and smashes in to the other end. Then he just all of a suden starts doing barrel roles in the center of his care....tosing and turning widely. He then stoped and tryed to walk. he cant. it is like his muscles wont respond, or do what ever they want to do and he has no controle. any one have any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

I don't know tegus (over here checking out the idea of getting one), but those symptoms sound as if they could be neurological. Get him to a vet ASAP. I suppose it's also possible some physical irritation he can't escape has made him frantic, but I'm concerned that you said he's unable to walk. That sounds really serious.

I can't say for sure. I have a red/blue cross that gets cranky when it sheds, almost bit through a fingernail. Other times it rearranges the tank slinging stuff everwhere...but the rolling over and trouble walking sound serious. Have you been giving calcium or vitamins? I have had no experience with metabolic bone disease but what you are describing sounds like it. Also i have heard instances where too large of a food item is served and it puts pressure on the nervous system. Like I said, I don't know for sure...a trip to the vet is probably your best bet. Let us know what you find out.

well getting him to the vet is almost totaly out of the question at this time. there is only one vet in my town that treats animals, and he only does it on wednesdays....no matter what. and it being a saturday night.....there isnt much i can think of to do. i will keep an eye on him for the time and see if he straightens up. hopefully he has just a bad case of the gas. i powder all his food with calcium. for the time being he is just curled up in the corner of his cage.
