Door Assembly

Boa_Constrictor Feb 02, 2004 10:49 AM

I am going to be making two stackable wood cages that measure 6ft by 2.5ft by 2.5ft. I am not sure what I would like to do with the front of the cage. I am by no means a skilled wood worker so whatever I do will have to be halfway simple. Would it be difficule to make sliding glass doors? I am open for any and all thoughts. Thanks.

I would encourage you to use whatever style door you like. At 6' long I would not recommend hinged doors that open sideways as they'll swing out pretty far.

Many people prefer flip down doors. I don't particuarly like them but that's my personal preference only. I have no objective argument against them.

One thing to consider is that your cages will likely require a center support of some sort, especially since you'll be stacking them. Double flip down doors may look nicer with this support that double sliding doors. Not enough to make me choose them, but it's something to consider.

But to answer your question, double sliding doors are very easy to build. The rough opening needs to be fairly close to square, but that's really the only trick.

There are some design issues to consider to insure sliding doors work properly. I can go into those once you decide which design you'd like to use.

Well I have a Neodesha cage that has sliding glass doors and I really like them so I would really like to at least keep the same design. I kind of understand what you are talking about with the wood needing to be square but if you could send me an email or reply with a diagram or directions on how to fabricate the sliding doors that would be awesome! Thanks for your advice. herpsandreptiles@hotmail.com

Hi,

I'm out of town for the week and only have net access with very slow dialup and a very small keyboard. It will be easier for me to go over this next week. Feel free to e-mail me through my name-link to remind me.

I agree with Chris' comments but another idea to consider would be doors that are removable altogether. You can use different types of latches or hooks to keep the doors on. I've used magnets, and I've even seen velcro used. I have removable "roof" sections for lack of a better term on my blood python enclosure that utilizes simple spinning wood blocks to hold them in place. As long as your door sits well on a ledge, a similar latching system can be used. If this isn't clear, let me know and I can send you a sketch.
