lele Feb 02, 2004 12:42 PM

does anyone know if asparagus has the same calcium - binding properties that broccoli, spinach have? We eat alot and I often give some to the crix and roaches.

thanks,
lele

no it doesn't and its vegetable that is recommended as part of a staple diet for iguanas...beet greens and spinach contain oxalates that bind calcium...kale, brussel sprotus, brocolli, cabbage and califlower bind iodine.

Does anyone have a reference as to what are good/bad things to gutload crickets with? If you have a gutloading products, do you really need to gutload them... and if so, with what? I have just been using carrots and broccoli

Adam,

as was just pointed out broccoli binds calcium so maybe not so good. It sounds like you need much more variety. There was a long, informative thread on gutloading last month:

as for store bought products,IMHO, you never know the freshness (any food loses a certain amount of nutritional value with each process it goes thru, its time spent on a shelf and HOW/where it is stored.

just my thoughts

when it comes to gutloading with veggies think color and you really can't go wrong...red peppers, green peppers, yellow peppers, carrots, bananna, peach, plum, dandelion..etc...you can offer the insects this on one side of a dish and commercial food on another...alot of people swear by "cricketfood.com"...i use "cricket food" by T-rex.

also, do not use "monkey biscuits" as cricket food because it is very high in D3.
