Made a trip to Agama International

My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Bert and Hester Langerwerf this weekend at their place. Bert gave a very full detailed tour of his facility. I left in awe! You just cannot imagine how big of a place he has built. It went on and on and on. Most of the lizards were in hibernation, so we didn't see too many animals. Bert showed me exactly how he built all of his outdoor microclimates, and I must say, I have building plans in the works already. It is amazing how warm he is able to keep the animals using no electricity at all! We went into some of the walk in greenhouses, and the heat would almost take your breath away. That being said, it was in the low 50's outside Saturday. I did see several species of lizards that you would not see anywhere else in the U.S. at his place. We went home with a new baby Argentine Black & White Tegu. If anyone else is able to make the trip to Montevallo, AL, I highly recommend going by and visiting with the Langerwerfs.

I too made this trip and left in awe. I have nothing but massive respect for the Langerwerfs and all they have accomplished in their lifetime to date.

That being said, after a few days it occurred to me that he had not only built all that to use no electricity, he built all that with "junk" that he collected. It was like one of those art projects that you see where someone takes things that somebody else threw away and turns it into a sculpture or statue. Only Berts was a functional habitat! I couldnt believe it and he had built bunkers for some of the reptiles(by the driveway as you come in). Now I know how that sounds, but if you see it you will know more directly what I mean. It isnt a trashy place, quite the contrary, its an awe inspiring work of art!

I too recommend seeing his place if you have the means!!!
I currently own 3 of the Langerwerf's tegus and have plans for more!
