that's scary, you never know what it is then....Could be a black rat /corn intergrade (or hybrid whatever the proper term would be?) Did they have it priced high because it was anery? Did it look like it could be a mix? I spose it's hard to tell a rat/corn from a corn since they are almost the same snake

no id say it was definatly an anery that was probably why it was priced that high. i really dotn think it was a hybrid because i aways find hatchling black rat snakes out in the field and they really didnt look like him/her. it was definalty think it was an anery.
they probably just sadi ti was a hybrid to make more money really i think thats what the guy she gets them from is in the business for cuz i have yet to see a proberly id'ed cornsnake there. she just writes down what on the deli cup and goes from there.

I wonder if it might be a good idea for us to find this guy. Bad corn marketing is bad for all of us, look at what goes on over in europe. (The one who claimed a line of (north american breeder)'s snakes descended from his European stock....long story, but it was all cuz someone over there wanted to get more $ for his corns, so he claimed they were something more "unique".)

Maybe you should be there when he brings them in next time...do a litle cornsnake spy work
lol Just a thought

I'm trying to breed him with my snow this year. He still doesn't seem to quite get it, but he does act interested in her. I think they'll make some great little anerys and possibly even some snows, (he "could be" het amel) If he figures out what to do before breeding season ends that is

Speaking of intergrades...
I was sold a black corn/black rat intergrade which seems to be developing some green in him. He looks a bit different than a normal corn, he has no head markings. I know green is not a normal color for corns, could this be the beginning to a new morph?

That's an intergrade between a yellow rat Elaphe o. quadrivittata and a black rat Elaphe o. obsoleta. I used to have one and it was dark grey and olive shades.
I'd be surprised to see green turn up from a corn snake hybrid, but that's just my opinion.

That actually sounds close to what I've got, except mine is more like olive and dark brown. I'm not sure which snake was the female, the rat or the corn. I can find out, but it would take about a week.

I just wanted to add a little story of my own. I was in a Petco the other day to buy some aspen shaving. They just got in a new stock of corns from a big well known breeder. I must say they were some nice looking little guys. They had a pretty candy cane, amel and an anery. The guy told me they had an okie in the back. I assume it was oketee. I asked how the snakes were labled when they recieved them. He said they are labled red phase or brown phase when they recieve them. Any way I guess if you have no knowledge of corns, and the person you get them from doesn't tell you what they are it's kind of hard to pretend to be a reptile expert.

Yeah, you can't really blame the stores, when they get so little info themselves. I can't imagine labeling my corns that way. Even to sell them "in bulk" or "wholesale" I would want people to know what they're buying. I may buy one from them someday, and it could screw up breeding projects in the future because some jerk was too lazy to label his "pet store" snakes correctly.

Those are the people who do it only for the money I think, and they are the ones I wish we could track down and stop. They wreck things for too many others, how many of us here started with a "pet store" corn? I did. Not again, unless I can get the breeder's info with the snake.
